Rain forest film to be shown Sunday

“Once Upon a Forest” by Luc Jaquet (who also directed “March of the Penguins”), an award-winning rain forest film, will be shown at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Smiley Building Auditorium, 1309 East Third Ave.

This is a fundraiser for Mountain Studies Institute. Tickets can be purchased in advance at Pine Needle Mountaineering, 835 Main Ave. and are $10, or $12 at the door. Children younger than 12 are free. Food and alcoholic beverages will be for sale. A raffle and panel discussion will follow.

Golf tournament to benefit nonprofit

The sixth annual Medicine Horse ‘Masters’ will take place Aug. 23 at the South Forty Course, 25500 Road H in Cortez.

Registration will take place at 8 a.m., and the scramble format/shotgun start will be at 8:30 a.m. The cost is $25 per player. A driving-range challenge and closest to the pin awards are offered. The entry fee includes nine holes of golf, course drinks and lunch. All event proceeds go to Medicine Horse equine-assisted therapy programs for youths and families.

Living-wage coalition to host picnic Aug. 17

La Plata County Thrive! Living Wage Coalition will host a picnic for people making less than a living wage from noon to 5 p.m. Aug. 17 at Fassbinder Park, at Main Avenue and 17th Street.

In La Plata County, a living wage is $12.40 for an individual, $25.50 for an adult with one child and $36.82 for a family of four.

People can stop by for free food, games and conversation. Participants should bring lawn games and chairs.
