Seminar will examine Medicare supplements

Seniors who have questions about Medicare supplements are invited to attend a free seminar from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at Vectra Bank, 1201 Escalante Drive.

Participants will learn time periods when they have to sign-up, their supplement choices, the cost differences and which one might work best. Questions about the Med Supp Open Enrollment Period from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7 will be addressed, and help will be provided for people who already have a supplement but wish the premium was less.

To make a reservation, call 749-0206. People should leave their name, phone number, expectations of the class and date of birth. Consultations with small groups and working seniors also are available.

Plants that heal to be discussed

Camilla Potter of Durango Botanical Society will present the class “An Apothecary Garden, Plants that Heal” from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

Participants will learn about plants in the herbal world with healing properties and how to use them. Participants will discover the crafting of tinctures, decoctions, infusions and tea. This class is free.

Allison Grange to host annual Harvest Supper

Mt. Allison Grange will host its annual Harvest Supper from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $4 for children. Children younger than 6 are free. The menu will include ham, roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, hot rolls, tossed salad, homemade pies, coffee and punch.

Meet the candidates for Southwest Studies

The Center of Southwest Studies and the Office of the President at Fort Lewis College invite the campus and community to the center’s director candidates’ public presentations.

A meet-and-greet reception will be held immediately after each hour-long talk. All presentations will take place in the center’s Lyceum Room, No. 120.

Tanzania mission work to be focus of meeting

Mercy Regional Medical Center will host a community meeting and discussion on mission work in Tanzania from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 9 at the Durango Public Library in Room 1, 1900 East Third Ave.

Mercy’s mission partners from Mbulu, Tanzania, will share information about their program, while attendees have the opportunity to connect and collaborate with others in the community who are involved in work in Tanzania. All community members with an interest or experience in charitable work in Tanzania are welcome. Hors d’oeuvres will be served.

Native Heritage month celebrated in Ignacio

Native American Storytelling will take place at 4 p.m. Friday at the Ignacio Community Library, 470 Goddard Ave. in Ignacio.

In honor of Native American Heritage month, Tribal Elder Russel Box Sr. will conduct a storytelling session at the library on the theme of “Bigfoot.”

Free paper shredding takes place on Friday

First National Bank of Durango will host a free Shred Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of its main office, 259 W. Ninth St.

The public is invited to bring up to 50 pounds of documents to be safely shredded and recycled by Phoenix Recycling.

First National Bank of Durango provides two free shred days each year.
