Lions chili supper, craft fair to be held Saturday

The ninth annual Lions Chili and Craft Fair will take place Saturday at La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.

The craft fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and admission is free. Chili will be served from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the cost is $6, and children 3 and younger are free. Tickets will be available at the door. Participants are encouraged to bring used eyeglasses to recycle.

Beef-quality assurance class to be hosted at fairgrounds

The La Plata-Archuleta Cattlemen’s Association will host a Beef Quality Assurance Certification Class from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 28 at the extension office at La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.

This free class is open to the public. Katy Lippolis, Colorado beef-quality assurance coordinator and graduate of the Colorado State University Department of Animal Sciences, will present the class. Lippolis will be joined by local veterinarian Jeff Warren. Refreshments will be served and the regular cattlemen’s meeting will follow the class at 7 p.m.

Beef-quality assurance programming focuses on educating and training cattle producers, farm advisers and veterinarians on the issues in cattle food safety and quality. It also provides tools for verifying and documenting animal husbandry practices.

Learning-disabilities film to be shown Oct. 29

The Rocky Mountain Branch of the International Dyslexia Association and Independent Education Advocates will present a film about learning disabilities called “How Difficult Can This Be? The FAT (Frustration, Anxiety, Tension) CITY workshop” from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 29 at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

A discussion will follow the film. The film observes parents, educators, psychologists and social workers in a series of ordinary classroom activities that could be causing a child frustration, anxiety and tension. Donations will be accepted and reservations are suggested.

Mancos Public Library to host computer classes

Mancos Public Library, 211 E. First St., will offer these programs in its community meeting room:

“Safety on the Internet with Mac devices” will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. Oct. 29. This class will focus on creating passwords, how to surf safely on the Internet and recognizing safe, reliable websites. Appropriate for non-Mac devices as well.

“Computer Basics” will take place 1:30 to 3 p.m. Oct. 31. Participants will learn to use basic hardware and parts of the computer, including a mouse and keyboard, as well as Microsoft Windows essentials.

“Using the Mac to make Photo Albums and Gifts” will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. Nov. 5.

“Email Basics” will take place from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Nov. 7. This class is intended for patrons who do not have an email address or who need to know fundamental email functions.

Water 101 Seminar to be held Nov. 1 in Cortez

The eighth annual Water 101 Seminar will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Holiday Inn Express, 2121 E. Main St. in Cortez.

The seminar, sponsored by Dolores Conservation District, Dolores Water Conservancy District, and the Water Information Program, will feature keynote speaker Colorado Supreme Court Justice Gregory Hobbs.

In addition, representatives from federal, state and local agencies will provide an understanding of water law and related issues in the area including local water sources, water administration, irrigation conservation, environmental concerns and answers to key questions pertaining to the acquisition and use of water.

The public registration fee is $35 before Friday or $40 after that and at the door. The registration fee includes lunch, snack and an information packet. The fee for professionals seeking continuing education credits is $50 before Friday or $60 at the door.
