Drivers reminded to look for wildlife

The La Plata County Living with Wildlife Advisory Board reminds local residents and people traveling across the region that the end of October and the beginning of November mark the main push of mule deer crossing highways on their fall migration to lower elevation winter range habitats.

Local drivers should slow down during low-light hours on their morning and evening commutes. Drive defensively, always being prepared for deer on the road.

If one deer crosses the road, expect more to come behind. Also pay attention to how other drivers are acting; if there are brake lights ahead there may be deer crossing. If oncoming traffic is very slow, again it could be a sign of deer crossing.

Finally, people who are involved in an animal-vehicle collision should contact the Colorado State Patrol to report the incident.
