Local medicinal weeds to be discussed

Herbalist Marija Helt will offer an herb walk and class called “Local Medicinal Weeds” from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Participants will begin outside viewing weeds, then spend some time learning medicinal uses. Using appropriate plants with a clean diet and physical activity can improve health.

Firewood cutting permits available to buy

Permits to cut firewood on National Forest or Bureau of Land Management lands are on sale at agency offices and retail outlets.

A purchase of $20 allows the bearer to gather 2½ cords of dead and downed firewood from federal lands for personal use before Dec. 31. Each tag is good for ½ cord of firewood. One household may purchase permits for up to 10 cords of firewood per year for personal use. Gathering firewood for resale requires a commercial permit.

Writing group to meet May 14

Writers and Scribblers will meet from 3:30 to 5 p.m. May 14 at Pine River Valley Bank in Durango, 1701 Main Ave.

“Trigger Your Imagination: Writing Exercises to Improve Your Work” will be presented by Melissa Stacy. Guests are welcome.

Genealogical society to meet Saturday

The Southwest Colorado Genealogical Society will meet at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at La Plata County Historical Society’s Animas Museum, 3065 West Second Ave.

After a business meeting, Robert McDaniel will give a presentation called “Emmet Wirt’s Apache Children.” Wirt was the licensed post trader to the Jicarilla Apaches and a well-known businessman-entrepreneur of the Colorado-New Mexico borderlands in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

La Posta Road opens with new stop sign

La Posta Road has opened after a temporary closure put in place by Mercury’s contractor, Okland Construction.

Okland has been building an underpass beneath U.S. Highway 160/550 connecting La Posta Road on the west side with the new Mercury Village Drive on the east side. La Posta Road now has a stop sign 1,000 feet south of Turner Drive, at the new underpass to Mercury Village.

Resolving seasonal allergies to be discussed

Caleb Gates, licensed acupuncturist, will discuss “Resolving Seasonal Allergies, Sinusitis and Allergic Asthma” using Advanced Allergy Therapeutics at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Program Room 2 of Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

Program to benefit Community Connections

Dancing with the Durango Stars will take place at 7 p.m. May 16 at the Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave.

Thirteen couples performing different dance styles will compete for the mirror-ball trophy. Dancers will include local musician Tim Sullivan; salsa dance instructor Erin White-Sinberg; Nick Becker, owner of Anytime Fitness in Three Springs; clients from Community Connections and Matt Leeder of Leeder Construction.

Dances to be performed will include Rumba, Bachata, Salsa, Lindy Hop, Zydeco, Tango, Cha-Cha-Cha, Swing, Waltz and Country 2 Step.

Mataholla Moon Belly Dance Troupe and the Durango Tango Community will demonstrate.

The event is a fundraiser for Community Connections, Inc. Proceeds will be used to provide services for people who are on a waiting list but don’t receive services because there are no state or federal funds available. A portion of the proceeds also will be used to provide respite for families caring for individuals who require 24/7 support.
