Estate planning classes offered

Wendy Rice with the La Plata Extension Office will lead a series of estate planning classes from 5:45 to 7:45 p.m. April 12, April 19 and April 21 at the Pine River Library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive in Bayfield.

These classes will help participants identify, evaluate and address legal issues related to end-of-life decisions. The course consists of three sessions developed to help people take the necessary steps to safeguard their family’s inheritance and to discuss the importance of evaluating legal matters related to later-life issues.

Advance directives will be explained in detail by a local physician, and specific legal needs and confusions will be examined by a local estate planning attorney.

Citizens Climate Lobby forming

The Citizens Climate Lobby offers a local opportunity to build political will for federal climate-change legislation.

The next meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. April 13 at 785 Main Ave. Participants should enter at the back of the building then go downstairs.

Ignacio library announces classes

The Ignacio Community Library, 470 Goddard Ave., will offer these classes:

“Vegetable Garden Design” will take place at noon April 13. Darrin Parmenter from Colorado State University and the La Plata County Extension Office will present vegetable garden design, planting guide and watering design.“So You Want to Make a Movie?” will take place from 10 a.m. to noon every Saturday in April. The class will cover: video camera operation; understanding audio; hands-on DV-camera use and tips; interview techniques; how to shoot an interview; getting the right coverage; editing software; and short-film styles and approaches.“Introduction to Windows 10” will take place at 5:30 p.m. April 12. Participants will learn some new features of Windows 10 and how it is fundamentally different from Windows 7 and 8.“Computer Basics: The Internet” will take place at 5:30 p.m. April 19. Participants will learn how to use a web browser to access the web and use Google to find information on the Internet.Open Mic Poetry Night will take place at 5:30 p.m. April 26. Ron Yellowbird and Burt Baldwin, local poets, will read some of their favorite poems that they have written. Equine group to hear about predators

The Four Corners Back Country Horsemen will meet at 7 p.m. April 14 at Bayfield Town Hall, 1199 Bayfield Parkway in Bayfield.

Nonmembers are welcome. The speaker will be Bayfield Wildlife Conservation Officer Ty Smith. He will share information about Colorado predators – primarily bears and cougars – that equestrians may encounter in the back country.

Hey, Durangoans: It’s Spring Cleanup time

The city of Durango will hold Spring Cleanup from April 11 to May 6.

Materials accepted will include: Furniture; large appliances; scrap metal; drywall; fencing; carpeting; tiles; open, dried paint cans; tree trimmings and branches less than 8 feet in length and less than 8 inches in diameter; and bagged or boxed loose brush and leaves. Piles need to be separated into yard waste, scrap metal and household trash. All items are to be placed in the alley or curbside for collection.

The cleanup schedule will be:

April 11-15, areas south of 15th Street and west of Ninth Avenue, including residential areas of U.S. Highway 160 west and U.S. Highway 160 east (Three Springs) located within the city limits.April 18-22, areas north of 15th Street to the north city limits, paralleling Main Avenue to the east and west, including the Animas City area. April 25-29, West side subdivisions, including Crestview, Needham, Rockridge and Junction Street areas.May 2-6, East side subdivisions including Riverview, North College, Hillcrest and SkyRidge areas. Dharma Center announces events

The Durango Dharma Center will host these events featuring Lama Tsultrim Allione at the new Dharma Center, Suite 109, 1800 East Third Ave.:

Lama Tsultrim will lead a meditation and offer a talk on the silent, sitting meditation practice of Shamanta-Vipassana in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition from 5:30 to 7 p.m. April 11. She will include an introduction to one of the methods so that everyone can try the practice together.In a retreat from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. April 16, Lama Tsultrim will address Machig Labdrön and the Nature of Mind. Labdrön was an 11th-century Tibetan yogini most well-known for developing the practice and teachings of Chöd (Cutting Through) as well as many nature-of-mind practices. During the retreat, participants will alternate periods of sitting, walking and discussion. Durango Crop Hunger Walk/Run to be held

The Durango Crop Hunger Walk/Run will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

The walk/run will start at Santa Rita Park and head north on the Animas River Trail. The three-mile walk/run will go to Schneider Park and return. The six-mile walk/run will go to the Durango Community Recreation Center and return.
