Scrapbooking group to meet in Ignacio

The Ignacio Community Library, 470 Goddard Ave. in Ignacio, will host a Scrapbooking Group at 1 p.m. every Thursday.

People can work on and share their scrapbooking project ideas with others.

Life-Long Learning series continues

The Life-Long Learning Lecture Series at Fort Lewis College will present “A Guide to Action for Ending a Dictatorship or other Forms of Oppression” at 7 p.m. Thursday in Noble Hall, Room 130 at FLC.

Jamila Raqib serves as the executive director of the Albert Einstein Institution and as a research affiliate of the Center for International Studies at MIT. She works closely with Gene Sharp, a scholar on strategic nonviolent action. Since 2002, Raqib has focused on the translation and promotion of global writings on the techniques of nonviolent struggle and its potential to address acute conflicts around the world.

Mercy will offer prediabetes class

Mercy Regional Medical Center will offer free education to people with prediabetes from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday in Suite 140 of the medical office building at Mercy.

People diagnosed with prediabetes are at a higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Effectively managing prediabetes can help prevent diabetes. Anyone identified as having prediabetes is invited to attend a free class by Sheena Carswell, CNS, BC-ADM, and Marge Morris, RD, CDE. Attendees will learn how to manage prediabetes and help prevent the onset of Type 2 diabetes.

Cowboy parade to be held Saturday

The Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering’s Cowboy Parade will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday on Main Avenue.

The parade is “motorless,” meaning no motorized vehicles are allowed. This year, more than 40 entries are expected, making the parade the largest in the 26-year history of the Durango Cowboy Gathering.

Entries will include wagons, horseback riders, walkers, dog groups and llamas. Live music will start at 9:30 a.m. at various locations along the parade route. A gunfight at the Strater Hotel will begin the festivities.

Following the theme of Honoring the Ranch Woman this year, the Parade Grand Marshal will be local ranchwoman Frances Hotter, who was born and has ranched in La Plata County since 1922. She will be accompanied by her brother, Lawrence Huntington, who is a longtime rancher.

The parade will begin at the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Train depot and runs north on Main Avenue. Headquarters for the gathering will be inside the Strater Hotel, 699 Main Ave.

Horse barrel race to take place in Ignacio

The Southwest Barrel Racers Association Barrel Race will take place Saturday at the Sky Ute Event Center, 200 East Colorado Highway 151 in Ignacio.

There will be a Pink Ribbon Silent Auction to benefit local breast-cancer organizations. Divisions will include open, youth and senior. There will be a pole-bending jackpot. The time-only runs will begin at 10:30 a.m. and the race will start at 12:30 p.m.
