City of Durango to spray public areas

The city of Durango Parks and Recreation Department will spray these areas through July 12:

Telegraph Trail on Raider Ridge.

Softball infields at Fort Lewis College Softball Complex.

Oxbow Park and Preserve on Animas View Drive.

Bar ditches around Hillcrest Golf Course.

Median on Bodo Drive.

City open space at 605 Clovis Drive.

Animas River Trail below Nature’s Oasis.

Gravel trail at the entrance to the Rockridge Subdivision.

City trail at Three Springs.

City right-of-way west of Durango Gun Club.

The herbicides that will be used are Milestone and Roundup-Rifle D-2-4-D.

Southern Ute museum to have holiday hours

The Southern Ute Cultural Center & Museum, 77 County Road 517 in Ignacio, will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Mancos State Park announces programs

Mancos State Park, 42545 County Road N in Mancos, will host these programs:

Learn about butterflies at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Friday at the amphitheater.

A three-legged race, hula-hoop contest and a game that will teach about wildlife habitats will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at the amphitheater and at 4 p.m Saturday.

A melodrama and Jeopardy game will take place at 7 p.m. Friday.

Bird viewing and discussion will be held at 7:30 a.m. Saturday. Participants should bring binoculars and meet at the picnic table near the entry gate.

How to find insects and dicussion about them to be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the picnic table area.

Navajo State Park announces programs

Navajo State Park will host these programs:

Becky Gillette, southwest regional director for Audubon Rockies, will lead a bird walk to look for shorebirds, song birds, raptors and others at 8 a.m. Saturday. Participants should meet at the north end of the Windsurf Beach at the Piedra Trailhead. Bring water, snacks and binoculars.

Youths can become a junior ranger by completing activities that encourage exploration, observation and study. By completing outdoor exercises and a written quiz, participants earn a Colorado Parks and Wildlife Junior Ranger badge and signed certificate. Activities are designed for ages 4 to 12.

The park naturalist will lead a variety of programs at 6 p.m. every Friday and Saturday, and at 9 a.m. every Saturday and Sunday.

Seminar to be held on divorce, custody

A “doing your own divorce and/or custody in Colorado” seminar will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

The seminar will be presented by a volunteer attorney from Southwest Bar Volunteer Legal Aid. The seminar is free, and preregistration is not required. Anyone who wants to receive a free book of forms and instructions is encouraged to arrive 10 minutes early.

Explosives to be used in Vallecito roadwork

As part of U.S. Forest Service construction on a new road south of the Vallecito Dam, explosives will be used from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday and July 10.

During each detonation, Forest Road 603 on the east side of the reservoir between Old Timers Campground and the dam, as well as the road across the dam, will be closed.

The public should also expect delays of up to an hour on Forest Road 603 after each operation to allow for debris to be removed. Later this year, the new paved road will connect County Road 501 to Forest Road 603 by a new bridge completed last year by the Forest Service.

State patrol to launch ‘Heat Is On’ campaign

Law enforcement agencies and Colorado State Patrol Troops across the state will have sobriety checkpoints and increased patrols as part of Colorado Department of Transportation’s “The Heat Is On” campaign beginning at 6 p.m. today through 3 a.m. Monday.
