Durango Derailers raise funds Saturday

The Durango Derailers cycling team is selling tickets for its fundraiser, Dancing with the Durango Stars.

Ten local couples will compete Saturday at the Henry Strater Theatre for the Mirror Ball Trophy. Dancers include: Brian Zink, Joe Clair, Ken Duncan, Ryan and Aisylin Lowe, Sally Zabriskie and Curtis Salinger.

The early show starts at 6:30 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. Trophies and prizes will be presented after the 8:45 p.m. show.

The Durango Derailers provide funds for gas, food and lodging to families who must take their children to see specialists at Children’s Hospital in Denver.

Durangoans featured on Free Speech TV

The nationally broadcast “Respectful Revolution” television series will feature stories about four Durango residents at 9:30 p.m. Saturday,on cable news channel Free Speech TV out of Denver.

Short video portraits were shot on Linda Illsley, former owner of Linda’s Tamales and Linda’s Local Food Café; Linley Dixon of Adobe House Farm; Charles Shaw, owner of the renovated Smiley Building; and Katrina Blair, local author, educator and owner of the Turtle Lake Refuge restaurant.

Beekeepers get their bees on Saturday

The Four Corners Beekeepers Association, the Buzz Club, will have its annual bee delivery day between 3:30 and 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Zuberfizz warehouse, 284 Sawyer Drive.

Honey bees come in a screened box, about the size of a boot box, with a queen in a cage. There will be 140 of these. The public is invited.

Two nonprofits awarded grants

Trails 2000 and Alternative Horizons have each been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Payroll Department. The grant introduces a new funding source for nonprofits in La Plata County by awarding up to $10,000 to nonprofits that support efforts in education, environment or human services.

To receive the grant funding from the Payroll Department, nonprofits must match the $10,000 in new money by Oct. 4.

Birding Festival gets underway Wednesday

The Ute Mountain-Mesa Verde Birding Festival will be held May 11-15, and will offer 25 tours that connect birding enthusiasts of varying skills with regional birding experts, who serve as tour guides.

Tour fees include travel by van to birding locales, lunch, water and snacks. The event is a fundraiser for the Cortez Cultural Center.

Horticulture lectures, workshops offered

The Durango Botanical Society and Colorado State University Extension Office will present a lecture and workshop series called “Rock’n in the Garden” from Sunday through May 15.

All lectures will be presented at the Durango Community Recreation Center. The workshops are at the crevice garden site at the Durango Public Library.
