Christmas party for military in the works

The Military Officers Association of America is planning a Christmas party and is reaching out to all retired and active-duty military officers in the Four Corners to attend.

La Plata County Thrive to meet, hold potluck

The La Plata County Thrive! Coalition meeting and potluck dinner will take place at 5:30 p.m. Monday in the first floor conference room of the Commons Building, 701 Camino del Rio.

Prostate cancer group to meet on Nov. 12

The Man to Man Prostate Cancer support group normal monthly meeting was not held Nov. 3.

In place of the normal meeting, the Prostate Cancer Support Group will be part of the November Life Long Learning Series panel discussion from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 12 in Noble Hall at Fort Lewis College. The Life Long Learning series guest speakers will be Dr. James Burpee, Dr. Jonathan Clarke and Cissy Anderson (wife of a prostate cancer survivor). Everyone is welcome. An opportunity to ask questions and learn of the latest in treatment will be offered.

Wedding expo to take place in Farmington

The Two Hearts Wedding Expo will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Farmington Civic Center, 200 W. Arrington.

Admission is free for brides and $3 for other adults. All brides will receive an expo bag and a certificate for a free bracelet from Garcia & Co. Jewelers. More than 30 wedding-industry vendors will display everything needed to plan a wedding – venues; caterers; wedding attire; disc jockeys and entertainers; health and beauty products and services; honeymoon trips and services and more. Live entertainment by Hello Dollface is sponsored by Orthodontics, Inc.

JaeGeo’s Bridal and Tuxedo will present a fashion show at 1 p.m., immediately followed by drawings for a free wedding gown courtesy of Occasions Bridal, Formal & Tuxedo in Durango; a $500 gift card from Garcia & Co. Jewelers and a honeymoon cruise to Mexico from Dinner 4 Two. Brides must be present at the drawing to win. Other door prizes will be offered as well.

Lecture to examine Mabel Dodge Luhan

The Life-Long Learning Lecture Series at Fort Lewis College will present “Mabel Dodge Luhan: Utopian Dreams and Taos Realities” at 7 p.m. Thursday in Noble Hall Room 130 at Fort Lewis College.

For five decades, wealthy society hostess, patron and writer Mabel Ganson Evans Dodge Sterne Luhan attracted leading intellectual and literary figures into her circle. Mistress of various salons in Europe, New York and Taos, she could be called America’s Madame de Stael. Dodge Luhan wrote for the leftist periodical The Masses while in New York where her famous salon flourished. When she moved to Taos, she continued to cultivate and alienate leading figures of the day. The presenter will be Judith Reynolds, an art historian and freelance journalist.
