Mass-casualty exercise planned in county

Durango School District 9-R and local and regional emergency first responders, including law enforcement, emergency-management services, Durango Fire Protection District, area hospitals and victim advocates will conduct a live, full-scale exercise mimicking the scenario of an active shooter in a school. This exercise will test all emergency agencies’ systems of preparedness, response and recovery in response to a school crisis and will be staged today at Sunnyside Elementary School, 75 County Road 218.

In addition to area emergency responders testing procedures and practices around search and secure, triage, evacuation, etc., Durango School District 9-R will be practicing their procedures around Parent Reunification. The reunification site for the exercise will be the Administration Building, 201 E. 12th Street.

Road crews finalizing details at 550/160

The Colorado Department of Transportation and contractor, Concrete Works of Colorado, are spending this week finalizing details from road striping to signage to basic construction cleanup. Travel impacts through Friday are:

U.S. Highway 160 and U.S. Highway 550: Median and single-lane closures and two lane shifts likely throughout the week, all directions. Single-lane closures are anticipated during nonpeak travel times from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and after 6:30 p.m.

Side streets (from CFI intersection to Ninth Street): Minimal and intermittent impacts as crews finalize striping and signage.

U.S. Highway 160, Tech Center to the CFI intersection: Expect lane, median and turn-lane closures; westbound, single-lane closures are possible anytime; eastbound, single-lane closures are anticipated during nonpeak travel times from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and after 6:30 p.m.

Roosa Avenue: Expect northbound lane closures during day and evening hours. There will be no left turns from eastbound U.S. 160 onto Roosa Ave.

Wildflower-viewing trip set for Saturday

The San Juan Four Corners Native Plant Society will visit Bolam Lake Meadows Saturday.

Bob Powell will lead this leisurely paced trip for wildflower enthusiasts and budding botanists. Participants will carpool up to Bolam Lake Meadows via the Hermosa Creek Pass Road, stopping for special wildflower displays and then wandering the forests and wetlands around Bolam Lake to view high montane wildflowers.

Come for one day or camp for several days. Be sure to bring lunch, two liters of water, layers of clothing and rain gear.

Maintenance projects on roads announced

The Colorado Department of Transportation Region 5 announces these maintenance activities that will impact travel through Friday.

Chip sealing will be done in the Hesperus area at state Highway 140, mile marker 0 to 5 (state line north) from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Expect single-lane, alternating traffic and delays.

Work will be done on U.S. Highway 550 on Red Mountain Pass, mile markers 80 to 87, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Crews will be building up shoulder material with recycled mud slide material, Expect some single-lane, alternating traffic.
