County GIS Department moves to Main Avenue

La Plata County has moved the Geographic Information Systems Department to the Old Main Post Office Building, 1060 Main Ave., Suite 101.

This move also will align the Information Technology staff departmentally within the same facility.

The GIS Department provides maps and parcel ownership data services to interested people, businesses, agencies and county staff. In addition, GIS is where residents request an address to be assigned for new construction outside of city or town limits in the unincorporated areas of La Plata County.

Animas Valley Grange to honor member

Animas Valley Grange No. 194 will observe the long membership of Roberta Barr at 2 p.m. Sunday at the grange on County Road 203.

Her participation in grange activities, during which she held many offices, will be observed with presentation of the 65-year pin, emblematic of continuous service in the unit since her teen years.

Barr, 99, is a Durango-area pioneer, a former schoolteacher and active member of numerous civic positions.

Historic documents will be available for review, and refreshments will be served.

Trees to be planted for Peter Carver

The first trees for the Peter Carver Memorial Forest will be planted Monday at the top of the rope tow at Chapman Hill.

A brief commemoration honoring Carver will take place at 6:30 p.m., with a potluck following.

Volunteers are needed at 4 p.m. and are asked to bring shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows, chairs and food for the potluck. Participants are asked to park across Rim Drive in the parking lot.

Highway paving to begin between Cortez, Towaoc

Paving will begin on U.S. Highway 160 between Cortez and Towaoc on Monday as part of the Colorado Department of Transportation’s resurfacing and safety-improvement project.

Work will be done from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday. Motorists should expect single-lane, alternating traffic with 15-minute delays through the work zone. There will be no work and no travel impacts from July 3 to 8.

The project, scheduled for completion by October, will improve the highway’s surface by recycling the top two inches of existing asphalt, then overlaying the road with three inches of new asphalt.

Work will include removal and replacement of guardrails, as well as drainage improvements.

Ignacio library announces programs

The Ignacio Community Library, 470 Goddard Ave., will host these programs:

“I Dig Big Machines” will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Community Cinema will show the film “Love Free or Die” at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. The film follows Gene Robinson, the first openly gay bishop in the Catholic Church.
