Breen Community Building to host dance

Breen Community Building, 15300 Colorado Highway 140 in Hesperus, will host a dance featuring the band Million Dollar Highway at 8 p.m. Saturday.

The cost is $5 per person. All proceeds will go toward repairs to the Breen Community Building.

Bridge deck to be repaired at Bondad

A Colorado Department of Transportation contractor is completing repairs to a U.S. Highway 550 bridge deck at Bondad at mile point 3.7.

The work is expected to be completed before the Thanksgiving holiday, weather permitting. From 7 a.m. to about 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, motorists will encounter single-lane, alternating travel across the bridge.

Regulation of blood sugar to be discussed

Herbalist Marija Helt will offer a class on natural support for blood sugar regulation from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Durango.

What and how people eat directly impacts blood sugar regulation, as does the level of physical activity. This class will offer practical tips on how to improve blood sugar regulation holistically. The group will discuss supportive foods, herbs, spices and lifestyle habits. There is a $15 suggested optional donation.

Suffering from pain topic of free lecture

A free lecture and demonstration for people suffering from pain, numbness, headache and shoulder issues will take place from 6 to 7:15 p.m. Thursday in Studio 10 of the Smiley Building, 1309 East Third Ave.

Participants will learn easy do-it yourself solutions to help them feel better and save time and money on doctor bills. Chiropractor and Yoga and rehab specialist Keneen Hope McNiven will lead the class. Preregistration is needed.

Republic Women to salute veterans

Captain Gail Harris will be the keynote speaker at the Salute to Veterans luncheon hosted by Southwest Republican Women from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Hilton Doubletree Hotel, 501 Camino del Rio.

Harris was recognized and hand selected to serve as the first woman in Naval History to serve as Intelligence Officer in a Navy aviation squadron. When she retired in 2001, she was renowned as the highest-ranking African American female in the United States Navy.

As director of the Joint Intelligence Center (news center), U.S. Strategic Command, she managed multimillion-dollar budgets and more than 500 men and women in the production of intelligence information, communication materials and broadcasts for military and government audiences. She also was selected as Department of Defense Lead. Harris was the first female attaché in a Middle Eastern country.

Insurance, financial advisers to meet

The National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors South Western Colorado will meet at noon Thursday in the Oak Room at the Strater Hotel, 699 Main Ave.

The cost is $15 for nonmembers. Two presenters will offer information on Social Security and affordable health plans compared to Obamacare.

Randy Wimsatt, president of New Mexico NAIFA, will give an update on Social Security, “What You Thought You Knew About Social Security Yesterday, Changed Today!”

Mary Hunt, district manager for US Health Advisors, will discuss US Health, which offers affordable health plans compared to Obamacare and group plans.

RSVP is needed by Monday to Judy Simmons at 247-1413. This is open to all insurance agents, financial representatives and general public with an interest.
