Building permit process to change

In an effort to ensure compliance with agency agreements between the city of Durango and the Durango Fire Protection District, the city building permit application process has changed. Effective immediately, all building permit submissions made to the city of Durango will need to have:

Proof that the fire impactfee for the Three Springs Development for all new square footage constructed has been paid to the fire district.

Proof of the submittal of building permit plans to the fire district for all commercial and multi-family permits.

Building permit applications will not be accepted without proof of payment of the impact fee and/or without proof of the submittal of the building permit plans to the fire district. Submittals to the fire district can be made from noon to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 104 Sheppard Drive or by appointment.

Private signs barred in rights of way

The Colorado Department of Transportation reminds supporters of issues and candidates that campaign signs are not permitted in state rights of way.

Placing those signs, along with real estate sales or any other types of signs, in state rights of way, is unsafe and illegal. Real estate signs can be placed outside the rights-of-way line on the property for sale. Campaign signs also are allowed on private property, outside the state rights-of-way line.

Meeting to discuss natural trail system

The city of Durango will host a public meeting to discuss the city’s natural surface trail system at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.

The Natural Surface Trails Committee will present a summary of their assessment of the trail system including Overend Mountain Park, Dalla Mountain Park and Horse Gulch to a joint meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, Natural Lands Preservation Advisory Board and the Trails 2000 Board. The community is invited and will have an opportunity to provide public input on proposed revisions to the natural surface trail system.

Unitarian Universalist Players to perform

The Unitarian Universalist Players will present “Under Milk Wood,” a play for voices by Dylan Thomas, at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Durango, 419 San Juan Drive.

The play will mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Welsh poet Thomas. The play evokes a day in the life of a small Welsh fishing village. Thomas wrote the work in 1953 as a radio play for voices. Singers from the Fort Lewis College Men’s Choir will augment the pub song Pembroke City. Running time is approximately 80 minutes with no intermission.

Sen. Mark Udall to visit Durango

Sen. Mark Udall will visit Durango from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. Monday on the roof of the La Plata County Democratic Party headquarters, in the Alpine Bank building on the corner of Main Avenue and 11th Street.

Participants will rally to launch the final push of the Get Out The Vote effort, designed to ensure every one of Udall’s supporters votes. Before and after the event, volunteers will knock on doors and call people who have not already voted to remind them to vote.

Transit center cashier window closed

City of Durango Parking is upgrading its computer system and the cashier’s window at the Durango Transit Center, 250 W. 8th St., will be closed from 10 a.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Monday.

The online payment system at http://durangogov.org also will be unavailable to process payments starting Friday morning. The system updates are scheduled to be completed, with the system back online by Monday. Payments may be made until 3:30 p.m. Friday at Durango City Hall, 949 East Second Ave.

Beginning Monday, monthly parking passes will only be available at the Transit Center Cashier Window from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. Parking ticket payments will remain available at City Hall and online at http://durangogov.org.

Three Springs to host Fall Festival

Three Springs will host its eighth annual Fall Festival from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The festival will feature: Trick or treating; Dave Mensch will perform on the Three Springs Plaza Stage; Monster Mash Fun Run; Cookie Walk; cupcake decorating; Needle in the Haystack Game; bouncy house; pumpkin patch; balloon twisting; coloring contest; face painting; games; concession stands; La Plata County Humane Society will hold a Pet Adopt-a-thon; and petting zoo. All guests are asked to bring a food item for the Manna Soup Kitchen Canned Food Drive Following the Fall Festival at 2:30 p.m.

Big Brothers Big Sisters will host the Run for Kids Sake Zombie Challenge.

Anytime Fitness hosting coat drive

Anytime Fitness, 125 Mercado Street, Suite No. 115, will host a coat drive through Wednesday.

A new member who brings a coat in will receive one month free and no enrollment fees. Current members will be entered to win three months free for every coat they bring in. All coats will benefit the La Plata County Family Center.
