Friends of Library to hold book sale

The Friends of the Durango Public Library’s biggest book sale of the year will be from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the library, 1900 East Third Ave.

Participants will receive a free Friends of the Library book bag to fill for $10. People may fill as many bags as they like. All books otherwise will sell at the usual price of $1 per pound.

People who join the Friends or renew their membership while shopping may win a chance to choose a free box of books for themselves. Four drawings will be held during the sale.

Learn about prostate cancer at FLC lecture

The Life-Long Learning Lecture Series at Fort Lewis College will present “Cancer Below the Belt” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Room 130 Noble Hall at FLC.

This panel discussion is hosted with the American Cancer Society prostate cancer support group Man-to-Man. The discussion will consider the detection and treatment of prostate cancer and the impact on the family. The panelists will delve into the questions and issues that patients confront when this disease strikes. A broad spectrum of treatment options will be presented, as well as recovery and residual effects. Topics will range from early detection to family involvement.

FLC to host forum on Animas River

Fort Lewis College will host a forum on metals and sediments in the Animas River at 5:15 p.m. Friday in the Student Union Ballroom.

Scientists from the University of Colorado, the U.S. Geological Survey and Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory will join experts from FLC in discussing how metals and sediments move in bodies of water, how those materials are monitored and what we can and can’t know about the impacts of the Gold King Mine spill. This presentation is general in nature, but will aim to increase the community’s understanding of the Animas River.

Native Roots hosts gardening class

Native Roots Garden Center, 26266 U.S. Highway 160, will host a free gardening class from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

“Standing Up to the Challenges of Year Round Gardening” will be presented by the staff of Growing Spaces, the Pagosa Springs manufacturer of Geodesic Grow Domes.

18th holiday gift show to be held at Strater

The 18th annual Artisans’ Holiday Gift Show & Sale will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday in the Oak Room of the Strater Hotel, 699 Main Ave.

The show will feature an eclectic blend of hand-crafted work by local artisans.
