Water Authority to meet Wednesday
The La Plata West Water Authority will host a public meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary School gym, 11274 Colorado Highway 140.
The authority will present updated information about progress on the rural domestic water system being planned for Western La Plata County. All residents and property owners are encouraged to attend.

9-R to host information for board candidates
Durango School District 9-R will host an information session at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 9-R Administration Building, 201 E. 12th St., for potential candidates interested in running for a board of education seat in the November election.

Violence coalition, Dogster’s fundraiser
The Violence Prevention Coalition and Dogster’s Spay & Neuter Program will host their first collaborative fundraising event from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Lost Dog Bar & Lounge, 1150 Main Ave.
Beer and wine will be available for $3 each.
The Violence Prevention Coalition will use money raised to provide community education about the link between animal abuse and violence and D-SNiP will continue providing affordable spay and neuter services to the Four Corners. There will be a brief program about the many ways animals and people intersect and influence each others’ lives.

Animal-rescue group seeking volunteers
The El Dorado Animal Rescue, a nonprofit, no-kill rescue in Farmington, needs volunteers to help with animal care and maintenance.
The shelter also needs pet food and financial assistance. Money or gift cards may be mailed to El Dorado, 508 W. Maple St., Farmington, NM 87401 or call (505) 325-7760.
People can help with veterinary bills by making donations to the El Dorado Animal Rescue account at San Juan Veterinary Hospital. The shelter has small, mixed and AKC house dogs and some large dogs up for adoption.
Gluten-free group to meet Tuesday
The Southwest Colorado Support Group for celiac and gluten-free awareness will meet monthly beginning Tuesday in the Florida Room of the La Plata County Fairgrounds Extension Building, 2500 Main Ave., to help people with a gluten-free lifestyle.
The group is a way to get and give support as well as stay up to date with new information, research, resources and products.
The group will meet the last Tuesday of the month starting this week. On odd-numbered months, the group will meet from 6 to 7 p.m., and on even-numbered months, the group will meet from 1 to 2 p.m.
People who are newly diagnosed are invited to attend a half-hour early to receive more information. This support group is free.

Durango Mall fundraiser to give school supplies
The Durango Mall, 800 South Camino del Rio, is partnering with Durango Foundation for Educational Excellence to help provide school supplies for children in the community.
Participating Durango Mall merchants will hand out a wooden token to shoppers who make a purchase of $25 or more. The tokens are deposited into boxes located in the mall common areas. Durango Mall will donate $1 for each coin collected and donate that amount to the foundation. Token contributors can enter to win one of several prizes being given away. The fundraiser will begin Thursday and last through Aug. 25.

Rotary club to meet Tuesday
Sterling Schaaf, manager of the Animas Mosquito Control District, has been rescheduled to speak to the Rotary Club of Durango at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Strater Hotel, 699 Main Ave.
The Animas Mosquito Control District covers about 100 square miles from Bakers Bridge to the north, Falls Creek to the west, Edgemont Ranch to the east and a point five miles south of city limits.
The district’s missions are controlling mosquitoes to enhance public heath and comfort; acting as an information resource about mosquito biology, control and prevention; insect identification and associated disease transmission; and operating in a safe, ecologically sound and publicly accessible manner. Prevention of spread of the West Nile Virus and other mosquito-borne diseases are a particular focus.
