Anasazi center to host curation tours

The curation staff at the Bureau of Land Management Anasazi Heritage Center will host weekly “Behind-the-Scenes” tours of its curation and collections management facility at 2 p.m. Thursdays from May 1 to Oct. 30.

Tours are open to the public but are free with the cost of admission to the center. Participants should reserve a place in advance by calling 882-5600. The tour provides an opportunity to understand why artifacts are preserved and how the curation process supports ongoing research. Each tour lasts about an hour.

Kentucky Derby Fundraiser to be held

The Rochester Hotel, the Young Professionals of Durango and Breckenridge Bourbon will host a Kentucky Derby Fundraiser from 2 to 5 p.m. May 3 in the garden at the Rochester Hotel, 721 East Second Ave.

Mercy Health Foundation is raising money for the new Hospice residence, a 12-bed residence for the end-of-life journey. At the event, there will be prizes for lady’s best hat, men’s best-dressed and a raffle for the winning horse. Tickets are $25 for Young Professional members and $75 for other guests and will include race viewing along with specialty drinks and Southern-style appetizers. Tickets can be purchased at the Durango Chamber of Commerce’s website or by calling 247-0312.

Annual craft sale to be held in Bayfield

Bartholomew’s annual Spring Craft Sale will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 3 at St. Bartholomew’s Catholic Church, 1749 County Road 526 in Bayfield.

Cinco de Mayo Fiesta to be held May 3

Supporting Fort Lewis College El Centro’s Hispanic and Multicultural students, Gazpacho restaurant will host the second annual Cinco de Mayo Fiesta at 1:30 p.m. May 3 at the restaurant, located on the fourth block of East Second Avenue.

These events will take place at the fundraiser:

Zumbathon will take place from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. The last 10 minutes will feature a Zumbatomic for Kids. There is a $10 suggested donation.

Piñata breaking will take place from 3 to 3:30 p.m.

Ballet Folklorico will perform from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Happy Hour with DJ Euphoria will take place from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

FLC Silent Auction and Chiquita’s Tiendita Booths will be available from 1 to 5:30 p.m.

By purchasing Gazpacho’s “El Centro Margarita” on Friday and Saturday, $2 of each drink’s proceeds will support the retention of Hispanic and multi-cultural college students at FLC.

Cinco de Mayo festivities to be held in Cortez

Vida en Victoria and the Cortez Cultural Center will host the Grand Cinco de Mayo Celebration from noon to 6 p.m. May 3 at the Parque de Vida, the pavilion located behind the recreation center at 425 Roger Smith Ave. in Cortez.

The event will feature Mexican food, a salsa and chili contest, Mexican music, piñatas and more.

Bird walk to be held May 3

A bird walk will be hosted by the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory at 9 a.m. May 3 at For the Birds, 1560 East Second Ave.

The walks last about one hour and 15 minutes. Bring binoculars. The walks are free, but donations to the hosting group are welcome.
