Benefit for homeless veterans to be held

Spa Evo will host a Noel Night benefit for Durango’s homeless veterans from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday upstairs in the Durango Office Suites Building, 1075 Main Ave.

The event will feature a bad Christmas sweater photo booth, holiday treats and libations. All donations and 10 percent of all sales will go to the Disabled Veterans of America La Plata County chapter to provide housing for those veterans in need.

Train owner Al Harper to sign book Friday

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad owner, Al Harper, will sign his new children’s book A Toy Train Under the Christmas Tree at 6 p.m. Friday at the D&SNGRR Depot, 479 Main Ave.

Church to provide child care Friday

Child care will be available to Noel Night shoppers and others from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 494 Florida Road.

The cost is $20 per child or $35 for two children. There are limited spots available for children infant to 6 years old. Children will be in the care of parent volunteers, high school interns and teachers of the Children’s World Day Care. A snack will be provided. Gluten-free cheese pizza can be substituted for an additional $2 per child. This will be a benefit for the Children’s World Day Care and Christ the King Lutheran Church

Festival of Trees to begin Dec. 6

The 10th annual Festival of Trees will feature decorated trees from 1 to 6 p.m. Dec. 6 to 8 and Dec. 13 to 15 at the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Train Museum, 479 Main Ave.

People could win one of the trees, ornaments, gifts, tree skirt and travel bag valued at more than $400 by entering the drawing. The cost is $10 for three tickets. All proceeds will benefit people with developmental disabilities in the area.

Water commission to meet today

The San Juan Water Commission will meet at 9 a.m. today in the San Juan Water Commission’s Conference Room in the San Juan Water Commission Office Building, 7450 East Main St. in Farmington.

Wellness program for 65+ to be held

Rite Aid, 28 Town Plaza, will host “Wellness 65+” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today.

The topic will be Medicare Part D, foot care, exercise and mobility. There will be a pharmacist on site for questions about Medicare Part D enrollment, prescriptions, and other questions the pharmacist can assist with. Medicare Part D open enrollment will end this month. There will be refreshments, snacks and goodie bags free to the public.

Local to receive military promotion

Michael E. Downin, station commander at the Durango Recruiting Station, will be promoted to the rank of Sergeant First Class in the United States Army at 9:30 a.m. Friday on the train-loading platform at the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, 479 Main Ave.

The ceremony will last 5 to 10 minutes.
