Readers theater presentation today

“‘Dear Father, Don’t Worry.’ Letters home from a student abroad” will be presented at 4 p.m. today at Roshong Recital Hall in Jones Hall of Fort Lewis College.

This is a 40-minute readers’ theater presentation for International Education Week featuring Swedish exchange student Daniel Barkenäs as Gustaf Nordenskiöld, the young Swedish scientist who conducted the first archaeological studies at Mesa Verde and whose activities sparked an international incident.

Life-Long Learning series continues

The Life-Long Learning Lecture Series at Fort Lewis College will present “Cancer in Southwest Colorado: Statistics, Hereditary Cancer Syndromes, and Other Important Information You Need to Know” at 7 p.m. Thursday in Noble Hall, Room 130 at FLC.

Randi Rycroft has worked for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment for more than 25 years and has served as director of the Colorado Central Cancer Registry since 2003. She will share information about the registry, what types of data are collected and how, along with available services for the public.

Learn about the latest cancer rates in Southwest Colorado compared with the rest of the state and nation. The co-presenter will be Elena Strait, certified genetic counselor with extensive experience in the field, who will discuss the difference between hereditary and sporadic cancers, give examples of hereditary cancer syndromes, and review past, present and future trends in genetic testing along with indications for when genetic counseling and testing are appropriate.

Community Connections to meet Thursday

A board of directors meeting for Community Connections Inc., will take place from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Thursday in the Lupine conference room at Community Connections, 281 Sawyer Drive, Suite 200.

Survivors of Suicide Day Saturday

The 16th annual International Survivors of Suicide Day will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Fort Lewis College in Noble Hall Room 130.

The three-hour program will include presentations about grief and the holidays, taking care of oneself after a suicide loss, the video “The Journey” and a closing ceremony honoring loved ones lost to suicide. Admission is free.

Day for transgenders to be held Thursday

Four Corners Support for Transgender people, Allies and Relatives, One Colorado and the Four Corners Gay and Lesbian Alliance for Diversity will host Transgender Day of Remembrance at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Durango, 419 San Juan Drive.

There will be a reading of the names of all 150-plus transgender people who were murdered or died by during the last year.
