LPEA approves scholarship opportunity for future linemen

The La Plata Electric Association board of directors recently approved the La Plata Electric Lineman Scholarship for those seeking a career in electric utility operations.

Applications will be available Monday, April 3, and are due Friday, April 28.

Linemen build, maintain and repair electric infrastructures, which involves climbing utility poles, working in bucket trucks and engaging “live” electrical lines. They are the first responders when issues occur in the LPEA system.

Funding will provide two annual scholarships that cover tuition, fees and books up to $12,000 for one year of an electric-line-worker program at an accredited institution, to include vocational schools, technical schools, junior colleges or universities in the U.S.

Any scholarship overage that exists after payment of tuition and fees can be used to purchase tools and supplies.

Eligible applicants must be high school graduates who live within the LPEA service area.

For applications and more information, contact Jeannie Bennett at 382-3505 or jbennett@lpea.coop, or visit www.lpea.coop.
