Magazzeni blocks way to RMAC award

FLC senior earns her first weekly conference award

Kaile Magazzeni went out of Whalen Gymnasium with a bang, and plenty of people noticed.

Magazzeni, a Fort Lewis College women’s basketball senior forward from Gilbert, Arizona, was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for games played last Friday and Saturday. It was the first RMAC weekly award of Magazzeni’s career.

“Really happy for Kaile,” said FLC head coach Jason Flores. “We’ve played some very good team-defense, and she has been a big part of that, which led her to being recognized individually.”

The 6-foot-1 senior recorded her third career double-double on senior night, and she came up three blocked shots of a triple-double. She scored 12 points and matched her career-best 12 rebounds Saturday in a 54-48 win against Regis. Her seven blocked shots were a career high and matched a single-game FLC record.

“It’s great to get all of these stats and stuff and have a double-double. It’s even better just to have the win,” Magazzeni said after Saturday’s crucial win that sent FLC from seventh to fifth in the conference standings. The win also clinched a spot in the conference tournament for the Skyhawks.

In wins against Metro State and Regis, Magazzeni averaged nine points, 8.5 rebounds, 3,.5 blocks and one steal.

Magazzeni has played in 92 career games for FLC. This season, she is averaging 8.3 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.54 blocks per game.

FLC will close out the regular season with two road games Friday and Saturday at Western State and Colorado Mesa, respectively.
