DENVER – A former Adams County sheriff’s deputy has been charged in the shooting death of his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son near Fairplay.
The Denver Post reported Tuesday that 45-year-old Jason Belmont was arrested on several felony charges, including child abuse resulting in death. His girlfriend, 30-year-old Stefanie Wray, is facing parallel charges.
Investigators say the boy, whose name hasn’t been released, was shot Nov. 13, possibly when a shotgun fell from a rack in a children’s play area at a home southwest of Fairplay. They also found a loaded pistol and a loaded rifle that were easily within reach of the several children living in the house.
Those children are between 4 and 13 years old.
Belmont and Wray have posted bail. Current phone numbers could not be found for either one Tuesday night.
