Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango announced it is suspending all non-emergent procedures this week because of an increase in positive COVID-19 cases among operating room staff members.

“The hospital is safe and continues to care for our community. The emergency department and operating room are prepared to respond to all emergency and trauma cases,” said Christopher Hudson, chief medical officer, in an email announcement. “All medical staff on duty have been, and will continue to be, screened for COVID-19 symptoms daily.”

No further information about COVID-19 cases among hospital staff members was available Tuesday evening.

The announcement said the procedures will be suspended through Friday. In addition, some routine visits to the cardiology clinic will need to be rescheduled this week.

“Across Colorado and our region, we are seeing an increase in community spread of COVID-19,” Hudson said.

At Mercy, more than 80% of staff members have received their COVID-19 vaccine. Mask-wearing is required at all times for everyone within the hospital, regardless of vaccination status, Hudson said.

He encouraged everyone to get the COVID-19 vaccine as a safe, effective way to dramatically reduce the risk of death or hospitalization from COVID-19.

He also encouraged people to follow public health recommendations, including wearing a mask, handwashing and social distancing.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and meeting daily with our clinicians to ensure the health and well-being of our caregivers and our patients,” Hudson said. “We will provide updates as the situation allows.”
