Of course it’s not a secret to us here in Southwest Colorado, but apparently to much of the rest of the country it is: Pagosa Springs/Wolf Creek is an excellent place to ski and soak.
Perhaps it won’t be hush-hush much longer. Earlier this month, National Geographic Adventure named Pagosa Springs one of its 10 “Best Secret Ski Towns of North America.”
The magazine’s online description says Wolf Creek Ski Area is “long renowned among the powder cognoscenti for having the best snow in the state. As for the town itself, there are only two things a skier needs to know about: hot springs and microbreweries.”
Wolf Creek also has one of the lowest lift ticket prices in the state – an adult all-day ticket is $58. If that sounds high to you, that’s understandable, but it probably means you haven’t been skiing for a decade or more.
Other towns on the list are Los Alamos, N.M.; Fraser; McCall, Idaho; Glacier, Wash.; Mount Shasta, Calif,; Philipsburg, Mont.; Cooke City, Mont.; Smithers/Terrace, British Columbia; and Field, British Columbia.
