Add to your book collection tomorrow

Looking to stock up on some great titles for all the summer reading you'll be doing? The Friends of the Pine River Library have been saving up the cream of the crop from their donated books for their annual Spring Book and Bake Sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 4 in conjunction with Bayfield Yard Sale Day. There will also be delicious baked treats for sale, with all proceeds supporting the library.

Compañeros discuss immigration program

Learn about the Deferred Action immigration program from 6 to 7 p.m. on Friday, June 10 at the Pine River Library. President Obama announced a new program called Deferred Action for Parental Accountability (DAPA) on Nov. 20, 2014, which allowed the parents of U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents who have continuously resided in the U.S. since before January 2010 to remain in the country without fear of deportation.

Danny Quinlan, executive director of Compañeros: Four Corners Immigrant Resource Center, will give a general presentation about the program. There will be an open question and answer session.

Book clubs meeting at Ignacio library

Three book clubs are meeting this month at the Ignacio Community Library.

Mystery Book Club meets at noon on Monday, May 13 to discuss Little Pretty Things by Lori Rader-Day. Is it a page turner or a drudge? staffers ask.

The Evening Book Club will discuss When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi. The New York Times calls this book "important enough to be unmissable". The meeting is at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 29.

The Daytime Book Club meets at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 30. Africa and elephants are topics of the novel Leaving Time by Jodi Piccoult. Part mystery, part family drama, this entertaining tale will take you for quite a ride.

Fishing contest is tomorrow at Vallecito

The Vallecito Conservation and Sporting Association will hold its annual summer fishing contest from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow. Registration is $30 per person at Vallecito Marina, and there's an extra contest for $5 for the heaviest stringer. More than $3,500 in prizes will be awarded, including $500 for the winner in each category of trout, pike, walleye, smallmouth bass and kokanee salmon. Second place gets a $200 gift certificate from Sportsman's Warehouse. The top five kids with the heaviest fish also will get a prize.

The contest is sponsored by the Hideaway Grill, Vallecito Lake Country Market, Rocky Mountain General Store, Rocky Mountain Liquors, Budweiser, Southwest Ice and the Lake House.

Four-legged friends available

The La Plata County Humane Society Adoptathon is today and tomorrow from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Humane Society just north of Wal Mart in Durango. There will be reduced adoption fees for dogs and cats, a concession stand, barbecue, and store-wide sales in the Humane Society Thrift Store. The event is sponsored by Ultrasteam Cleaning, Sunnyside Farms Market, Coca Cola, X-Rock radio 105.3 FM, KIQX radio 101, and KRSJ country radio 100.5 FM. Chamber meeting at car wash

The Bayfield Chamber of Commerce will meet from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 9, at Mud Shaver Car Wash on Wolverine Drive in Bayfield.
