Memorial Day service this Monday at cemetery

A Memorial Day service will be held at the Allison-Tiffany Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 30.

"Come and join us in honoring our loved ones and our veterans," organizers said. The cemetery is located on County Road 329.

Library hosting watercolor workshop

A beginning watercolor workshop will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday June 2, 9, 16 and 23 at Ignacio Community Library.

The course will cover brush strokes, washes, hard and soft edges, how water works on paper, containers, and paints and color. Students will learn how to activate their right brain as they practice techniques and complete two paintings, a landscape and a flower, in the four week class. There is a $10 materials fee. Registration is required and the class limit is eight adults. To register, call the library at 563-9287.

Commissioner to meet public on June 2

County Commissioner Julie Westendorff will hold her monthly meet the public session at the Pine River Library on Thursday, June 2, from 10 a.m. to noon. Residents are invited to come with questions or comments about county issues. For information call 382-6219.

Ignacio, Allison churches holding Vacation Bible School

Allison and Ignacio Community Churches invite children to Cave Quest VBS: Following Jesus, the Light of the World!

Cave Quest will be hosted at ELHI Community Center from Monday, June 6 to Friday, June 10. At Cave Quest, kids explore what it means to follow Jesus through dark times. Kids will participate in memorable Bible learning activities, sing catchy songs, play teamwork-building games, dig into yummy treats, and test out scientific and fun gizmos they'll take home and play with all summer long. Plus, kids will learn to look for evidence of God all around them through something called God Sightings.

Cave Quest is for kids preschool age through incoming fifth graders and will run from 8:30 a.m. to noon each day. For more information, call Sara at (970) 769-6145.

Learn methods of food preservation at library

Are you looking to cut down on food waste and lower your food costs? On Thursday, June 2, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Pine River Library, Wendi Rice from the La Plata County Extension will give tips on how to effectively cut your food budget through preservation techniques like dehydrating and freezing.

Participants will experience the differences (why, what, cost) between five vacuum sealers and three dehydrators, as well as a variety of canning equipment including jam maker and electric water bath canner. To register for "Food Saving 101," contact the library at 884-2222, ext. 510.

First aid, CPR |classes offered 

Heart Safe LaPlata, a local non-profit organization, will teach basic first aid from 3 to 6 p.m. on June 2, followed by an Adult CPR/AED class.   There will be a CPR Pro class from 6 to 10 p.m. on Thursday, June 9.

Both classes are at Durango Fire & Rescue Station 1, 142 Sheppard Drive in Durango.

Registration due June 1 for chili cookoff, dessert derby

Vallecito Service League will hold its annual chili cookoff from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 12 at the Vallecito Community Center.

Entry registrations are due by Wednesday, June 1. Contestants are asked to bring a pot of chili and $10 fee or a dessert cut into small pieces and a $5 fee. Samples of all the entries will be available for purchase. Proceeds will be used for the Vallecito fireworks on Sunday, July 3. To register an entry, call Diane at 884-6021.

Learn fly fishing and fly tying

The Pine River Library will host a Beginning Fly Fishing course on Saturday, June 11, from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. It will be taught by local fly fishing guide Glenn Tinnen and Library Director Shelley Walchak.

Participants will learn how to fly fish or brush up on their basic skills in this four hour workshop. "We're excited to offer this great opportunity to learn from Glenn Tinnen, an accomplished fly-fishing guide along with me, a librarian/fly-fisher enthusiast. No better combination than books and fly-fishing!" said Walchak, who wrote a book about her year of fly fishing around the West.

There is a $20 registration fee for this course. Pre-registration is required. Call or stop by the library information desk to sign up.

The library will also be offering a beginning fly tying class from 6 to 8 p.m. on July 14. Participants will learn how to tie a Wooly Bugger and a San Juan Worm. Pre-registration and a $10 materials fee are required for this class.
