Old-time marshals had interesting duties

Some interesting reading during a Police Week celebration on May 14 was the initial charter for the Bayfield Marshal's Office from the town's founding in 1906.

Ed Henderson was the town's first marshal, and he built the town jail in 1908 for a cost of $25.25.

He was paid $15 per month, and duties included catching dogs. He also had to "suppress all riots," according to the town charter.

In 1938, Bayfield erected its first stop sign and had a speed limit of 17 mph. In 1939, the town had its first public toilet.

"We're still catching dogs," said Bayfield Marshal Joe McIntyre during an awards ceremony on May 14 for National Police Week.
