Parking for La Plata County Fair to be restricted

The La Plata County Fair will be held Wednesday through Aug. 13, and parking will be largely unavailable. The La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave., will offer almost no parking according to a advisory sent out by La Plata County on Thursday. The nearby parking lots of Durango High School and Miller Middle School that are often used as supplemental parking will be completely inaccessible because of construction.

The notice sent out by the county included a breakdown of alternatives.

  • Carpooling is strongly encouraged regardless of where attendees choose to park.
  • The Durango Transit Center, 250 W. Eighth St., was at the top of the list as the free fare summer program will still be ongoing. Parking downtown and taking the trolley is limited by the trolley’s 20-minute interval and the 8 p.m. cut off for the service. The city does provide the TransLoc app to riders for live-tracking buses.
  • A temporary park and ride service is being put in place for two days of the fair. From 6-11 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m.- 6 p.m. Aug. 12, a shuttle will take people from the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave., and Needham Elementary School, 2425 West Third Ave., to the fairgrounds. People may walk to the fairgrounds as the river trail runs behind the library.
