ASPEN – Aspen is again a dead-end town as the Colorado Department of Transportation has closed Independence Pass, “likely” for the season.

The Colorado Department of Transportation cited 6 inches of snow that has fallen in recent days and drifts up to 4 feet high.

The pass also is seeing continuing blowing snow. A storm is forecast for today and Monday.

On Monday, road crews will determine if reopening the pass is feasible and safe prior to the target closure date on Thursday.

The 12,095-foot pass between Aspen and Twin Lakes is closed for the winter every year. Each spring, CDOT plans the opening of Independence Pass for Memorial Day weekend, weather permitting.
