Police identify man who rolled car on East Third Ave.

Police on Wednesday identified the man who rolled his pickup earlier this week on East Third Avenue in Durango.

Mora Sandoval, 29, of Durango, was reaching for his cell phone when he struck a curb causing his green Toyota 4Runner to flip near East Third Avenue and 12th Street, said Lt. Ray Shupe, with the Durango Police Department.

The accident occurred about 9:30 p.m. Monday.

Sandoval was treated for minor injuries and was cited for careless driving, Shupe said.

Alcohol is not suspected to have played a role, he said.

Fort Lewis College student Chase Gaumond was driving eastbound behind Sandoval when the pickup struck the curb, hit a tree and rolled over.

“As I approached the crash sight, I put my flashers on, used my car to block the road, and made sure the guy was OK,” Gaumond said.

Sandoval suffered a cut to his elbow but otherwise seemed unharmed, Gaumond said.
