Prep Roundup: Bayfield girls suffer narrow loss in home opener to Pagosa Springs

DHS girls golf ties for 1st in Farmington

In its home opener, the Bayfield High School girls soccer team had plenty of chances to score on Pagosa Springs, but solid goalkeeping from Pirates’ keeper Diana Scott, and BHS playing down a player in the second half, kept the Wolverines scoreless in a 1-0 Pagosa Springs victory Tuesday at BHS.

The Pirates (3-5, 2-2 3A Region 5) broke the 0-0 match in the 58th minute with a bit of luck. Hailey Griego took a shot that BHS keeper Lana McKee jumped up and grabbed, but, as McKee came down, the ball squirted loose and Sarah Ross poked it into the back of the net.

Bayfield (3-4, 1-1 3A Region 5) had a good chance for the equalizer late in the match, but Scott took care of a shot from Bayfeild’s Halle Loveday to secure the shutout.

With the loss, Bayfield and Pagosa Springs split the season series with each team picking up a road win.

Bayfield will be back at home Friday to host the Mean Moose of Alamosa (6-1, 3-0 3A Region 5) at 4 p.m. at BHS.
