St. Mark’s Episcopal to welcome new rector

The Rev. Debra (Debbie) Metzgar Shew has joined St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Durango and will begin leading worship services at 10:30 a.m. July 10.

Shew most recently served as interim rector at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Snellville, Georgia.

Before serving at St. Matthew’s, Shew served as interim rector at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in New Haven, Connecticut.

She also served eight years as the canon for community ministries for the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta and was also vicar and director of Emmaus House in Atlanta.

The St. Mark’s search committee and the vestry recognized and appreciated Shew’s rich educational background and activities, her interest in and knowledge of social justice, leadership in youth and children’s programs, strong convictions about pastoral care and her commitment to building an encouraging and supportive church structure.

The St. Mark’s vestry will host a welcome reception and potluck in St. Mark’s Parish Hall, 910 East Third Ave., after the July 10 service.

Methodists to explore ‘What is your god like?’

The First United Methodist Church will explore the question “What is your god like?” during a 12-week study of the message of the prophets of ancient Israel.

A great temptation is to make God into our own image, which makes that god – small “g” on purpose – too small, weak and phony.

During this series of sermons, participants will wrestle with how the prophets’ message applies today and how we might have a picture of God that is full and rich, filled with grace and mercy.

Services are scheduled at 5:30 p.m. Saturdays and 8 a.m., 9:30 a.m., and 11 a.m. Sundays at the church, 2917 Aspen Drive.
