San Juan Mountains Association examines women’s visit to South Pole

Women’s South Pole visit examined

The San Juan Mountains Association Members’ Series Event, “American Women’s Antarctic Expedition” will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Public Lands Center in Durango.

Anne Dal Vera will present a slideshow on the first all-women’s ski expedition to the South Pole. A 678-mile journey, the four women pulled 185-pound sleds in wind and sun over the snow from Hercules Inlet on the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole. Dal Vera is one of the four women on the expedition, and she is also Lead Wilderness Ranger on the Columbine Ranger District, having more than 30 years of service as a Forest Service wilderness ranger. She has been a member of SJMA since she moved to La Plata County in 1999.
