Schirard right to uphold U.S. Constitution

In response to the letter “Duke Schirard part of sheriffs’ movement,” from Denise Bohemier (Herald, Sept. 5), I am so glad she has brought this to everyone’s attention. Imagine a sheriff who actually believes enough in the U.S. Constitution to stick his neck out – and possibly his livelihood – to support the governing laws and intentions of our founding fathers. Unlike another local elected representative, Sheriff Duke Schirard believes the Second Amendment is absolute and shall not be infringed upon. I am proud of our sheriff for what he believes in. His proclamation regarding not enforcing unenforceable new laws that infringe upon our rights is further proof that his leadership is essential to our county. I believe the majority of La Plata County residents will feel the same way come November.

Regarding the campaign signs and Durango sign ordinances, I see way more Sean Smith signs in questionable places than signs for Schirard. Because I don’t live in the city limits or understand Durango’s sign code, I’ll leave that for the professionals – unless they are too consumed working on pot regulations, vacation rental ordinances and parking meters. Glad I don’t live in town.
