Sharks win a wild on in shootouts

Avalanche do well to take a late lead before San Jose rallies at home
In a back-and-forth game Monday night in San Jose, Calif., Mike Brown and the Sharks beat Cody McLeod and the Colorado Avalanche 5-4 with a 2-0 victory in shootouts.

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Joe Pavelski scored with just less than 20 seconds left in regulation to tie the game, and Logan Couture and Patrick Marleau scored in the shootout to lift the San Jose Sharks to a 5-4 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Monday night.

Eric Johnson and John Mitchell scored goals 12 seconds apart in the final two minutes of regulation to put the Avalanche ahead.

Johnson’s 6-on-4 power play goal slipped under Sharks’ goaltender Antti Niemi’s left shoulder to knot things, and Mitchell’s goal also came with an extra skater as he beat Niemi from a bad angle to the stick side.

Pavelski tied it after taking a pass from Joe Thornton, who has an 11-game point streak against the Avalanche.

Brent Burns, Jason Demers and Matthew Irwin also scored for the Sharks.

Gabriel Landeskog and Nathan MacKinnon tallied for the Avalanche.
