Sill’s hat trick leads Durango hockey against Los Alamos

Durango hockey splits with Los Alamos

A narrow loss to open the weekend didn’t deter the Devils.

After falling 2-1 to Los Alamos on Saturday at Chapman Hill Ice Rink, the Durango Area Youth Hockey Association High School Varsity Hockey squad skated to a 4-1 win Sunday to salvage a weekend split.

A stout defense and tough goalie in Sam Fisher held the Devils (4-2) to one goal Saturday. Fisher made 32 saves to earn the win.

Durango senior goalie Robby Grogan was every bit as good, making 27 saves Saturday and another 26 in Sunday’s win.

The Hilltoppers changed goalies for Sunday’s game, and Zachery Brown made 31 saves while allowing four goals.

Gus Kid had the lone Durango goal Saturday, assisted by Sam Kid.

Landen Sill led the offensive attack for the Devils Sunday with three goals. Timmy Miller also had a goal and an assist in the game. Everett Howland had two assists, Wyatt Killinen earned an assist and Joe Lawton assisted Sill’s third goal for the hat trick.

Penalties slowed the Durango attack in the first game of the weekend, particularly in the second period. The teams were tied at 1-all going to the third period, but the Hilltoppers found a way past Grogan with less than 4 minutes remaining to score the game-winning goal.

Durango stormed back trying to find a tying goal, but two shots went off the post as the game ended.

Los Alamos claimed an early 1-0 lead Sunday before the Devils scored four unanswered goals in the second and third periods.

The Devils will return to the ice to face Santa Fe at home Dec. 17-18.
