Silverton woman arrested for allegedly shooting at boyfriend

Angela McCarty suspected of felony menacing, domestic violence

A 54-year-old Silverton woman was arrested this week after allegedly shooting at her boyfriend in a campground just outside of town.

San Juan County Sheriff Bruce Conrad said the woman was arrested Sunday on suspicion of felony menacing and domestic violence. Court records identified her as Angela McCarty.

According to an arrest affidavit, authorities responded to disturbance Sunday afternoon in which McCarty allegedly fired four shots at her boyfriend at a campground 2 miles up County Road 110.

The boyfriend, court records show, ran away and drove off in his truck. The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office interviewed him at his home in Silverton.

He told authorities he and his girlfriend were having an argument – she, inside a camping trailer and he, outside – when she shot at him with a .38 Smith and Wesson Special revolver.

Deputies arrived at the campground about 3 p.m. and spoke to several witnesses who said they had heard gunshots. They handed deputies a revolver.

McCarty was found at her sister’s home and taken to the Sheriff’s Office for questioning. She told authorities she didn’t want to talk to her boyfriend, who kept banging on the trailer door to get in.

“(McCarty) told me that she heard the window break to her trailer and that she grabbed her .38 Special, opened the door and fired four shots up in the air because she was scared,” the investigating officer wrote.

McCarty told authorities the gun found at the campsite belonged to her. She is out of custody and has a court hearing scheduled for June 2.
