German court drops charges on Formula One boss

Bernie Ecclestone is free to concentrate on running Formula One after a German court dropped a bribery case against him Tuesday in exchange for a $100-million payment.

After hearing more than three months of evidence, the Munich state court cited significant doubts that the 83-year-old Ecclestone could be convicted on charges of bribery and incitement to breach of trust as it approved an agreement between his lawyers and prosecutors and closed the trial.

NCAA declares CU lineman eligible to play this fall

BOULDER – Auburn transfer Shane Callahan was declared eligible to compete for the University of Colorado this fall.

Callahan, a 6-6 offensive lineman from Chaparral High School in Parker, redshirted as a freshman in 2012 for the Tigers and appeared in two games for them last fall. He enrolled at Colorado in July and joined the team for preseason practices that began Saturday.

Colorado submitted a waiver appeal to the NCAA asking that Callahan be allowed to compete immediately based on family reasons instead of having to sit out a year like most transfers do.

Schar comes out on top of Boulder Mountain breakaway

TORREY, Utah – Michael Schar of BMC Racing Team survived a six-man breakaway over Boulder Mountain, then time-trialed to victory Tuesday in the second stage of the Tour of Utah.

Schar was part of the lead group for the entirety of the 131-mile stage, the longest of this year’s race. After cresting the final climb, the reigning Swiss road race champion managed to hold off the peloton by 2 seconds – roughly 20 feet – at the finish line.

SmartStop’s Jure Kocjan finished second for the second consecutive day. Serghei Tvetcov of Jelly Belly finished third.

NBA plans a summer friendly next August in South Africa

The NBA will stage an exhibition game next August in South Africa.

Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum made the announcement Tuesday in Johannesburg, where the NBA is holding a Basketball without Borders camp. He said all proceeds will go to charity.

Spurs hire CSU, WNBA star Hammon as an assistant

The San Antonio Spurs hired WNBA star Becky Hammon on Tuesday, making her the first full-time, paid female assistant on an NBA coaching staff.

Hammon, the former Colorado State University star who plans to retire from the San Antonio Stars after this season, spent time working with head coach Gregg Popovich and the Spurs last season and made a strong impression on an organization with a history of forward-thinking moves.

Man United beats Liverpool to win Champions Cup

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata scored two minutes apart in a second-half flurry, Jesse Lingard added an insurance goal in the final minutes, and Manchester United rallied to beat longtime rival Liverpool 3-1 on Monday night in the title match of the International Champions Cup.

Steven Gerrard scored on a penalty kick in the 14th minute for Liverpool.

Female leads a men’s team in France’s second division

BREST, France – Corinne Diacre became the first woman to coach a men’s professional soccer team in a competitive match in France when her Clermont team lost 2-1 on Monday at Brest in the second division.

Diacre, who turned 40 on Monday, made 121 appearances for France and captained the national side. She served as its assistant manager for three years before taking charge of Soyaux.
