Gators chomp the No. 2 spot behind unbeaten Orange

Syracuse still is No. 1 in the AP college basketball poll, but it is no longer a unanimous choice.

The Orange (25-0), who won two games in the final seconds last week, are on top for a third consecutive week, but they received 64 first-place votes Monday from the 65-member national media panel. They were a unanimous choice the last two weeks.

Florida (23-2), which won at Kentucky on Saturday, moved from third to second and received the other first-place vote.

Wichita State (27-0), the only other unbeaten Division I team, moved from fourth to third, while Arizona, which lost to Arizona State last week, dropped from second to fourth.

Duke moved from eighth to fifth and was followed by San Diego State, Cincinnati, Kansas, Villanova and Saint Louis.

UConn women still the top dog in women’s poll

Connecticut remained No. 1 in The Associated Press women’s poll Monday after winning its only game this week.

UConn improved to 26-0 this season after routing South Florida on Sunday and will host Central Florida on Wednesday before visiting Houston on Saturday.

Notre Dame remained No. 2. The Irish, who also are unbeaten this season at 24-0, topped Boston College in their lone game of the week. Notre Dame has a busy week playing Georgia Tech, Wake Forest and Duke.

Louisville, South Carolina and Stanford rounded out the first five.

Orioles reportedly to release a 1st-round pick for Jimenez

BALTIMORE – A person familiar with the situation said free-agent pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez and the Baltimore Orioles have agreed to a contract, pending a physical.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Monday night because the deal had not been completed and the club had not made an announcement.

Several media outlets reported earlier that the sides had reached an agreement, which reportedly is for about $50 million over four years.

Jimenez went 13-9 with a 3.30 earned-run average in 32 starts for Cleveland last season. He turned down a $14.1-million qualifying offer from the Indians, so Baltimore would have to forfeit its first-round draft pick (17th overall) to sign him.

Orioles’ executive vice president Dan Duquette has been searching for a veteran starter for much of the offseason to help anchor the rotation. Jimenez is 82-75 with a 3.92 ERA over eight major league seasons.

The 30-year-old right-hander broke into the majors with Colorado in 2006. His best season was 2010, when he went 19-8 with a 2.88 ERA in 33 starts for the Rockies.

Suggs staying in Baltimore; Rice arrested in N.J.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Terrell Suggs signed a four-year extension with Baltimore that saves the Ravens salary cap room and puts the linebacker in position to finish his career in Baltimore.

The 31-year-old Suggs signed a six-year deal in 2009 that expired after the 2014 season. Now he’s signed through 2018.

At a news conference Monday to announce the extension, Suggs said, “Sizzle will be a Raven for life.”

Suggs was expected to count $12.4 million against the salary cap. Now he’s at $7.8 million.

Suggs earned his sixth Pro Bowl invite in 2013. The 11-year veteran is the franchise leader with 94½ sacks.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – Police in Atlantic City said Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice was arrested at a casino there after an argument with his fiancee turned physical.

Atlantic City police said Janay Palmer and Rice both were arrested on simple assault charges and were released on a summons after an incident at the Revel Casino early Saturday morning.

Both Palmer and Rice declined medical attention, and neither reported any injuries.
