Logano blows a tire, which opens a door for Menard

BROOKLYN, Mich. – Paul Menard won the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Michigan International Speedway on Saturday when leader Joey Logano was victimized by a flat tire with about five laps remaining.

Menard ended up holding off Sam Hornish Jr. by a half-second for his first series victory since 2006. It was his first Nationwide start of the season.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished third, followed by pole-winner Kyle Busch and Brian Scott. Regan Smith finished seventh and remained atop the points list.

Menard, one of several Sprint Cup drivers in contention in the event, won the 250-mile, 125-lap race in his No. 33 Chevrolet.

Busch won his third Nationwide pole of the year but was unable to repeat his victory two weeks ago at Dover.

TAMPA, Fla. – Sydney Leroux scored a first-half goal, Hope Solo got her 71st career shutout, and the United States women’s team beat France 1-0 in an international friendly Saturday night.

Solo made a nice save on Elodie Thomis early on, then got a break when Eugenie Le Sommer’s shot hit the post 15 minutes before halftime. Solo tied Briana Scurry for the most shutouts by a U.S. goalkeeper.

Leroux scored her team-leading seventh goal this season from up close in the 21st minute.

U.S. forward Abby Wambach, who has 167 career goals, was not in the lineup. Wambach hurt her left knee during a National Women’s Soccer League game earlier this month.
