Vettel returns to form, wins the Hungarian GP

BUDAPEST, Hungary – Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel won an action-packed Hungarian Grand Prix for the first time Sunday, while Nico Rosberg blew his chances of catching Lewis Hamilton in the title race when he punctured a tire near the end.

Four-time F1 champion Vettel started third on the grid. It was his 41st career win and first since the Malaysian GP in the second race of this season.

Red Bull took advantage of late chaos, as Russian driver Daniil Kvyat placed second and Daniel Ricciardo, who clipped Rosberg with five laps to go, took third.

OAKVILLE, Ontario – Jason Day birdied the final three holes to win the Canadian Open on Sunday, spoiling David Hearn’s bid to become the first Canadian winner in 61 years.

Day made a 20-foot putt on the par-5 18th for a 4-under 68 and a one-stroke victory over Bubba Watson. Day finished at 17-under 271 at Glen Abbey.

Day was coming off a fourth-place tie Monday in the British Open at St. Andrews. The 28-year-old Australian also fought vertigo symptoms last month to tie for ninth in the U.S. Open.

Willett works a win week after Open splash

CRANS MONTANA, Switzerland – Danny Willett won his third European Tour title after a one-shot victory over Matthew Fitzpatrick in the European Masters on Sunday.

The 27-year-old, who tied sixth at the British Open on Monday, shot a 5-under par 65 to finish on 17 under overall.

Willett made five birdies in a bogey-free final round unlike Fitzpatrick, who bogeyed the first and 11th holes.

Biggio, Johnson, Martinez, Smoltz enter Hall of Fame

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y – Three pitchers who became dominant after trades and a rock-solid catcher-turned-second baseman entered the Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday.

Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, John Smoltz and Craig Biggio basked in the moment, with at least 40,000 fans cheering them one more time.

Many waved Dominican flags for one of their own. Martinez joined former Giants great Juan Marichal as the only Hall of Famers from the Caribbean nation.

Playing through an era tainted by steroids and ruled by offense – compliments of bulked-up sluggers, a smaller strike zone and smaller ballparks – Johnson, Martinez and Smoltz proved indomitable. They combined for 735 wins, 11,113 strikeouts and nine Cy Young Awards.

Biggio, who played four positions in his 20-year career, all with the Houston Astros, was indefatigable, becoming an All-Star at second base and behind the plate.
