Angels ace Richards shut down for season

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Los Angeles Angels ace Garrett Richards won’t pitch again this season because of a tear in his right elbow.

Richards last pitched on May 1 and was diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral five days later. Manager Mike Scioscia said Friday that Richards was done for the year.

Richards is hoping stem-cell treatments can help him avoid Tommy John surgery and be ready for 2017.

Richards was 1-3 with a 2.34 ERA in six starts this season. He went 13-4 in 2014 and was 15-12 last year.

Padres send arms to Marlins in 7-player deal

MIAMI – The Miami Marlins acquired the pitching reinforcements they sought in a trade that cost them four players, including two minor leaguers.

Right-handers Andrew Cashner and Colin Rea were sent to Miami by the San Diego Padres in a seven-player deal Friday.

The Marlins will also receive pitching prospect Tayron Guerrero for right-handers Jarred Cosart and Carter Capps and two minor leaguers, pitching prospect Luis Castillo and first baseman Josh Naylor.

Cashner is 4-7 this year with a 4.76 ERA in 16 starts, and has a career record of 30-49 with a 3.73 ERA in seven seasons. Rea, who is in his second major league season, is 5-5 with a 4.98 ERA in 19 games this year.

Paintball injury sidelines Cowboys linebacker

OXNARD, Calif. – Damien Wilson can be added to the list of freak accidents in the offseason for the Dallas Cowboys after the second-year linebacker injured an eye in a paintball accident.

Executive vice president of personnel Stephen Jones said Friday the incident happened about a week before the Cowboys reported for training camp in California.

Wilson is joined on the non-football injury list by running back Darren McFadden, who broke his right elbow during Memorial Day weekend trying to save his cellphone when he dropped it.

Fire forces already upset Aussies to evacuate

RIO DE JANEIRO – Australian Olympic team members were forced to evacuate their lodgings on Friday at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics after a small fire in a basement parking area caused smoke to fill the stairwells.

Australian team spokesman Mike Tancred said about 100 athletes and officials were evacuated from their building in the sprawling athletes’ village.

The fire will once again draw attention to Rio’s spotty preparations, which have been marred by the Zika virus, severe water pollution, crime, and slow ticket sales.

This comes after a tension-filled week in which Australia refused to occupy its building, citing gas and plumbing leaks, electrical shorts, and general filth.

Germany’s Schweinsteiger resigns from national team

BERLIN – Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger announced Friday that he is retiring from international football after making 120 appearances over 12 years.

“I have just asked the coach not to nominate me anymore for the national team because I would like to step back,” the 31-year-old Schweinsteiger said on Twitter.

Schweinsteiger expressed his disappointment at the team’s failure to win this year’s European Championship - Germany lost to France in the semifinal - but he remembered “moments that were unbelievably special and successful.”

The combative midfielder produced an inspired performance to help Germany beat Argentina in the 2014 World Cup final in Brazil.
