Penn State trustees to authorize Sandusky deals

HARRISBURG, Pa. – The Penn State board authorized university officials to settle litigation related to Jerry Sandusky, but it’s unclear how much money is at stake.

The trustees voted 18 to 6 on Thursday to let high-ranking administrators execute settlements.

Chairman Keith Masser said the board discussed dollar limits during a closed session before the vote.

He said the authorization covers “one or more” claims related to the actions of Sandusky, the school’s former assistant football coach now serving a lengthy prison sentence for child molestation.

Road Trip! Team set to embark on 55-game trek

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Most players making a living in minor league baseball know a secret remedy or two for dealing with life on the road.

The Biloxi Shuckers are about to put those remedies to the test.

Over the next two months, the Milwaukee Brewers’ Double-A affiliate will embark on a scheduled 55-game road trip, one of the longest in recent memory.

The franchise moved from Huntsville to Biloxi in the offseason, lured partly by the promise of a $36 million stadium. It is expected to a beautiful facility eventually.

Because of various issues, including construction delays, it probably won’t be ready for two more months

Copeland listed in stable condition after apology

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Pacers forward Chris Copeland apologized for making a “bad choice” and promised to work toward a full recovery after being stabbed outside a New York nightclub early Wednesday.

The team provided an update Thursday, saying Copeland is in stable condition following surgery on his abdomen and left elbow. The Pacers say there is no timetable for Copeland to be released.

On Thursday, Copeland thanked teammates, the organization and Pacers fans for their support while acknowledging he should not have been out that late the night before a game.

Copeland’s girlfriend and another woman also were stabbed. A 22-year-old suspect was in custody.

Steelers’ Bell won’t toll for team’s first three games

PITTSBURGH – Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell faces a three-game suspension following his arrest on DUI and marijuana charges last August.

A person with direct knowledge of the suspension told The Associated Press Bell is expected to appeal the suspension. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the disciplinary action had not been announced by the league.

Bell was arrested last August following a traffic stop in a northern Pittsburgh suburb along with then-teammate LeGarrette Blount.

Candace Parker will park it for start of the season

Los Angeles Sparks star Candace Parker will sit out at least the beginning of the upcoming WNBA season to rest.

Parker, a two-time MVP, will celebrate her 29th birthday next week. She has spent her entire career with the Sparks since she was drafted with the No. 1 pick in 2008. She missed the first eight games of the 2009 season after giving birth.

Phoenix Mercury star Diana Taurasi said in February she is skipping the entire 2015 WNBA season after accepting an offer from her Russian club to rest. Parker is on the same team as Taurasi but isn’t getting paid by UMMC Ekaterinburg to sit out.
