PGA and Euro players warm up for Open Championship

SILVIS, Ill. – Brian Harman won his first PGA Tour title Sunday, using three consecutive birdie putts in the final five holes to pull away from veteran Zach Johnson to win the John Deere Classic.

Harman had a 5-under 66 in the final round for a 22-under-262 total and a one-stroke victory over Johnson to win $846,000, along with the last exemption for next week’s British Open.

Harman, a 27-year-old Georgian in his third full season on the PGA Tour, withstood Johnson’s challenge by making three birdies beginning at No. 14 to get to 23 under with two holes to play.

ABERDEEN, Scotland – Justin Rose won the Scottish Open by two shots after a final round of 6-under 65 on Sunday, sealing back-to-back victories either side of the Atlantic and bolstering his confidence ahead of next week’s British Open.

The 2013 U.S. Open champion turned the last day into a procession, rolling in six birdies and going bogey-free on a windless Royal Aberdeen links course.

Unheralded Swede Kristoffer Broberg finished second on 14 under after a 66.

Montgomerie mows down a major in U.S. Open playoff

EDMOND, Okla. – Colin Montgomerie won a three-hole playoff against Gene Sauers to win the U.S. Senior Open title Sunday at Oak Tree National.

Both entered the playoff at 5 under. Montgomerie entered the third extra hole with a one-shot lead, then made a putt on No. 18 to par the hole and claim the win.

Montgomerie became the fifth golfer to win both the PGA Championship and U.S. Senior Open in the same year. He led at the end of the first and second days of the Senior Open but entered the final round four shots behind Sauers and shot a 2-under 69 to force the playoff.

Dozier and the Twins blast past Rockies in first-half finale

DENVER – Brian Dozier cranked up for the Home Run Derby at the All-Star game with two homers, and the Minnesota Twins beat the Colorado Rockies 13-5 on Sunday.

Dozier hit a solo homer in the eighth and added a three-run shot an inning later for his first career multihomer game. The second baseman will be one of the participants for Monday’s Home Run Derby at his home ballpark, Target Field.

Late fill-in Chris Parmelee ignited a five-run first inning for the Twins with a two-run single.Hughes (10-5) picked up his 10th win despite allowing five runs and 10 hits in five innings. It was his first appearance at Coors Field.

Brett Anderson (0-3) was rusty in his first outing since April, as he allowed six runs – five earned – in five innings.

Rangers prospect Gallo lifts U.S. to Futures Game win

MINNEAPOLIS – Texas Rangers prospect Joey Gallo showed off his power with a soaring two-run homer in the sixth inning to give the U.S. team the lead for good in a 3-2 victory over the World squad Sunday at the All-Star Futures Game for baseball’s best minor leaguers.

Gallo’s one-out drive to right field off Houston Astros right-hander Michael Feliz was estimated at 419 feet. The 20-year-old third baseman for Double-A Frisco hit several other balls farther than that during a head-turning batting practice display at Target Field.

World Cup’s stars – new and old – take tournament awards

RIO DE JANEIRO – Lionel Messi received the award for best player of the World Cup, minutes after his Argentina team lost the final 1-0 to Germany.

Messi was selected ahead of Thomas Mueller of Germany and Netherlands forward Arjen Robben by FIFA’s technical study group of coaching analysts.

Germany’s Manuel Neuer collected the best goalkeeper prize.

James Rodriguez of Colombia got the golden boot award as top scorer with six goals. Mueller was second with five goals.

The best young player award went to Paul Pogba of France.
