Greene says no to police, then gets arrested

FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Tennessee Titans running back Shonn Greene was arrested for allegedly parking in a handicapped space and speeding away when an officer was issuing a citation.

Greene surrendered to police Friday night after being told warrants had been obtained for his arrest, said Franklin, Tennessee, police Sgt. Charles Warner.

The matter could have been ended with a simple parking ticket, but now Greene faces multiple charges, Warner said.

The veteran running back was charged with driving on a suspended license, reckless driving, failure to stop/halt/frisk and illegal parking, Warner said. Greene was released on $2,000 bond and is due in court Nov. 13.

Tampa gives tackle McCoy a record 7-year deal

Defensive tackle Gerald McCoy signed a seven-year extension with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers worth $98 million, making McCoy the highest-paid player at his position.

McCoy, a 2013 All-Pro, will get $51.5 million guaranteed, the most ever given to a defensive tackle in NFL history. His new deal will average $14 million per year.

Including his current salary for 2014, McCoy would make $111 million over the eight-year period.

McCoy is in his fifth NFL season and comes off his best year, when he had 9½ sacks and 35 tackles.

Miller skips season-opener with a balky bad back

SOELDEN, Austria – Bode Miller is sitting out the season-opening men’s World Cup giant slalom Sunday because of a persistent back injury.

U.S. Alpine director Patrick Riml said Miller is getting treatment on a spinal disk and is expected to join the team again for training in Colorado in November.

Miller, who turned 37 this month, returned last season from a year off to recover from knee surgery. The American standout, who has won 11 medals at major championships and holds two overall World Cup titles, won the traditional first race of the season on the Rettenbach glacier in 2003 and again the next year.

Shiffrin matches Fenninger atop the first GS podium

SOELDEN, Austria – Mikaela Shiffrin wasted no time fulfilling her ambition to start winning giant slaloms this season.

The 19-year-old American, already dominating the women’s slalom circuit for two years, clinched her first GS win Saturday, sharing victory with overall World Cup champion Anna Fenninger in a tense season-opening race.

Austrians Eva-Maria Brem and Kathrin Zettel came in third and fourth, respectively, 0.66 and 0.67 off the lead.

Shiffrin led Fenninger by 0.09 seconds after the opening run but looked out of contention when she trailed Fenninger by 0.63 seconds halfway down her second run. The American accelerated to reduce her deficit to 0.09 at the final split time before crossing the line while matching the Austrian’s time.

Her first win in a discipline other than slalom, where Shiffrin is the Olympic and world champion and holds back-to-back World Cup titles, immediately elevated her chances at the overall title.

Shiffrin’s teammate Julia Mancuso, the 2006 Olympic GS champion, was a late starter in 47th after lacking results in the discipline in recent seasons. Mancuso finished 4.11 off the lead in 17th.

Sarah Schleper, who hopes to compete for Mexico at the world championships in Beaver Creek and Vail in February, made her return to the World Cup at age 35, three years after retiring. She didn’t qualify for the final run.

A men’s GS on the same course is scheduled for Sunday. The women’s World Cup will continue in Levi, Finland, for a slalom Nov. 15.
