Henry, McCaffrey, Watson are Maxwell Award finalists

Alabama running back Derrick Henry, Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey and Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson are the finalists for the Maxwell Award, given to the nation’s best player.

The finalists for the Chuck Bednarik Award for best defensive player are Temple linebacker Tyler Matakevich, Penn State defensive end Carl Nassib and Alabama linebacker Reggie Ragland.

The Doak Walker Award finalists for best running back are Henry, McCaffrey and LSU’s Leonard Fournette.

Finalists for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award are Watson, TCU’s Trevone Boykin and Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield.

The Outland Trophy for outstanding lineman finalists are Baylor tackle Spencer Drango, Stanford guard Joshua Garnett and Alabama defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson.

Other finalists:

Biletnikoff Award (outstanding receiver) – Corey Coleman, Baylor; Josh Doctson, TCU; Laquon Treadwell, Mississippi.

Lou Groza Award (outstanding kicker) – Daniel Carlson, Auburn; Jake Elliott, Memphis; Ka’imi Fairbairn, UCLA

Ray Guy Award (punter of the year) – Michael Carrizosa, San Jose State; Tom Hackett, Utah; Hayden Hunt, Colorado State.

Jim Thorpe Award (best defensive back) – Jeremy Cash, Duke; Vernon Hargreaves III, Florida; Desmond King, Iowa.

Ties cut with the head of Russian anti-doping agency

MOSCOW – Cycling’s world governing body, the UCI, has cut ties with Russian anti-doping agency managing director Nikita Kamaev amid Russia’s doping scandal.

Kamaev’s agency, known as RUSADA, was suspended by the World Anti-Doping Agency after a WADA commission alleged that its staff helped to cover up failed drug tests by Russian athletes.

Reyes pleads not guilty to abusing wife in Hawaii

WAILUKU, Hawaii – Colorado Rockies shortstop Jose Reyes pleaded not guilty to allegations of abusing his wife at a Hawaii resort.

Maui police arrested Reyes after an argument Oct. 31 with his wife that allegedly turned physical.

Reyes didn’t attend his arraignment Tuesday on Maui. According to court records, defense attorney David Sereno entered the not guilty plea on Reyes’ behalf.

Favre, Warner, Owens among hall semifinalists

Brett Favre, Terrell Owens and Alan Faneca are semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility.

Other semifinalists, all of them previously eligible, include Kurt Warner, Isaac Bruce, Morten Andersen, Tony Boselli, Kevin Mawae, Tony Dungy, Marvin Harrison, Orlando Pace and John Lynch.

Already nominated by the seniors committee are Ken Stabler and Dick Stanfel. The 2016 contributor candidate is former 49ers owner Edward DeBartolo, Jr.

FIFA ethics committee seeks life ban of Platini

PARIS – Michel Platini’s lawyer said the FIFA ethics committee has requested a life ban for the UEFA president.

Platini faces a hearing before FIFA ethics judge Joachim Eckert in December.

Platini is currently serving a 90-day ban over a $2 million payment of FIFA money he received in 2011 as backdated salary. He worked as a presidential adviser from 1998-2002 for Sepp Blatter, who also faces the ethics court’s judgment in the case.
