Degenkolb wins Stage 12; Contador keeps his lead

LOGRONO, Spain – John Degenkolb of Germany timed his sprint perfectly to win the 12th stage of the Spanish Vuelta as Alberto Contador retained the overall lead Thursday.

Degenkolb just beat Tom Boonen of Belgium and Jacopo Guarnieri of Italy to the line after a largely flat 103-mile race in and around Logrono.

Alejandro Valverde remained second and was unable to shorten Contador’s 20-second overall lead, with Rigoberto Uran third, 1 minute, 12 seconds behind. Chris Froome was in touch in fourth, 1:24 behind.

Friday’s stage is a 117-mile mountainous ride from Belorado to Obregon, Spain.

The 21-stage ProTour major will end in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, in 10 days.

De La Rosa and the Rockies agree to 2 years and $25M

DENVER – Left-hander Jorge De La Rosa and the Colorado Rockies agreed to a $25-million, two-year contract through 2016.

The announcement was made by the Rockies on their Twitter account late Wednesday night. De La Rosa, who has an $11-million salary this year, will make $12.5 million in each of the next two seasons.

The 33-year-old has been a dependable arm in a rotation hampered by injuries. He’s 13-10 with a 4.26 earned-run average as the Rockies try to avoid the team’s first 100-loss season.

De La Rosa’s 68 wins while with the Rockies trail only Aaron Cook (72) for most in franchise history.

In recent seasons, De La Rosa’s relied just as much on a strong changeup as his fastball. He underwent elbow surgery in 2011.

Barrie and the Avalanche agree to a 2-year deal

DENVER – The Colorado Avalanche signed Tyson Barrie to a two-year deal after a breakout season by the defenseman: Barrie gave the Avalanche an offensive presence at the blueline as he led the defensemen with 13 goals.

The 23-year-old played a big role in helping the team advance to the playoffs under first-year head coach Patrick Roy. Barrie was a key loss when he went out in Game 3 of the postseason series against Minnesota after a knee-to-knee hit from Matt Cooke, who drew a seven-game suspension.

Avalanche executive Joe Sakic described Barrie as “a big part of the young nucleus of our team.”

With three overtime goals last season, Barrie tied Colorado’s single-season record set by David Jones in 2010-11.

Moore’s ‘long and trying’ lawsuit finally settled

TORONTO – Steve Moore said the 10 years since his NHL career ended with an on-ice attack have been “long and trying,” but he is glad to be done with the legal ordeal.

Moore’s multimillion-dollar lawsuit against Todd Bertuzzi and the Vancouver Canucks was settled shortly before trial. Bertuzzi pleaded guilty to criminal assault causing bodily harm for the 2004 hit.

Moore said in a statement that “while nothing replaces the loss of one’s dream,” he is grateful to move forward.

Bertuzzi’s lawyer confirmed the settlement two weeks ago. Moore’s lawyer, Tim Danson, said there was no “binding and enforceable settlement until the language of the settlement documents was agreed to by all parties.” He said that happened Thursday.

Moore’s lawsuit alleged the Canucks put a bounty on him after his check as a Colorado Avalanche rookie that injured Vancouver captain Markus Naslund.
