Woods running out of chances to salvage season

GAINESVILLE, Va. – Tiger Woods is running out of opportunities to salvage a lost season.

This week’s Quicken Loans National could be his second-to-last start before the new PGA Tour season begins in the fall. He’s on track to miss the FedEx Cup playoffs, and he needs a victory just to be eligible for next week’s Bridgestone Invitational, on a course where he’s won eight times.

Royals make another splash, land Zobrist

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Kansas City Royals made another big addition for the season’s stretch run, acquiring utilityman Ben Zobrist and cash from the Oakland Athletics for right-hander Aaron Brooks and minor league left-hander Sean Manaea.

The 34-year-old Zobrist, an infielder and outfielder, batted .268 with six home runs, 20 doubles, two triples and 33 RBIs in 67 games for the A’s, who are last in the AL West.

Nationals score Papelbon in trade with Phillies

MIAMI – The Philadelphia Phillies traded All-Star closer Jonathan Papelbon to the Washington Nationals.

Papelbon is Philadelphia’s career saves leader with 123 and is 17 for 17 in save chances this season. Papelbon also is Boston’s saves leader with 219.

Goodell upholds four-game suspension for Brady

NEW YORK – Tom Brady’s four-game suspension for his role in using underinflated footballs during the AFC championship game last season was upheld by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

The New England Patriots’ star quarterback was suspended by NFL executive Troy Vincent in May following a league-sanctioned investigation by Ted Wells. The Patriots were fined $1 million and docked a pair of draft picks. The team didn’t appeal its penalty, but Brady and his lawyers made their case during a 10-hour appeal hearing on June 23.

The NFL Players Association said it would challenge the decision in court if Brady’s suspension wasn’t erased.

If new city found, Boston debacle will be forgotten

Embarrassing as the debacle in Boston may have been, chances are it will be nothing more than a distant memory when the vote for the 2024 Olympics finally rolls around.

That’s still more than two years away, and the U.S. Olympic Committee has seven weeks to replace Boston with a more willing candidate.

On Tuesday, the next phase of the USOC’s selection process began, with all eyes focused on Los Angeles. Mayor Eric Garcetti has already expressed a willingness to listen if the USOC does call. San Francisco and Washington were also on the initial short list of the USOC’s domestic candidates.

Mexico soccer coach fired after journalist’s allegation

MEXICO CITY – Embattled Mexican national soccer team coach Miguel Herrera was fired after a TV reporter’s claim that the coach known as “El Piojo” punched him.

Soccer Federation head Decio de Maria announced the move Tuesday.

The incident involving Television Azteca’s Christian Martinoli took place Monday at the Philadelphia airport as the team prepared to return to Mexico after its 3-1 victory over Jamaica in the CONCACAF Gold Cup championship match.

Martinoli accused Herrera of hitting him in the neck.

The journalist has been a tough critic of Herrera, as have many Mexican fans and pundits disappointed with the team’s play.
