How do you tell the story of a stadium in disrepair so the community will support your fundraising efforts?
In Durango School District 9-R’s case, you make a video, “Get in the Game, Durango.” The video, released Wednesday, gives viewers a virtual tour of the dilapidated track and compacted field and includes several students talking about what their activities and sports mean to them.
Work on Phase II of the stadium repairs – a new track and synthetic-turf field – began in early June and will cost $1.5 million. District 9-R took out a 10-year loan to pay for the work and is raising money to pay off the loan, about $153,000 annually.
“It’s dangerous, and that’s why we’re pushing the project,” said Dan Snowberger, 9-R superintendent. “It’s not because we want a prettier stadium. The track has been unsafe for years, and the field has become so compacted, it’s a hard clay surface, and it’s not safe, either.”
