In December 1993, the U.N. General Assembly declared May 3 to be World Press Freedom Day to highlight the importance of the right to freedom of expression. This year’s 30th anniversary is a call to bring press freedom back to the world at large.

World Press Freedom Day celebrates principles of press freedom, assesses the state of press freedom throughout the world and pays tribute to journalists who have lost their lives. This day is a reminder of the incredible impact on human rights brought about by an independent, pluralistic and free press. The Durango Herald is proud to be a participant in the tradition of these ideals.

This day is also an acknowledgment of how a democracy can only thrive with an informed population and is a time to defend the media’s independence. For more information on the origins and celebration of World Press Freedom Day visit: un.org/en/observances/press-freedom-day.
